Google Starts Social Media Blog

Google has launched a new blog to focus on its social intitiatives such as Google Friend Connect as well as broader efforts like OpenSocial.

"We are launching this blog for anyone interested or involved in helping to make the web more social," according to the debut post on the company's social Web blog. "Whether you own a site and want to add social features to increase community engagement, or you're developing a great social application, this blog is for you."

Google has yet to make much impact when it comes to social media. Marshall Kirkpatrick at ReadWriteWeb noted that OpenSocial hasn't solved the data portability problem and FriendConnect has been "pointless." He also expressed concerns with Google social efforts such as the new Latitude service, which lets users tracks friends whereabouts via mobile device.

But, fittingly, the search giant said it also welcomes feedback on the social blog. --Mark Walsh
