SEO Basics: Writing SEO Friendly Content

The internet was created on the basis of sharing content. Google’s algorithms are designed to scan the text and code of a website to evaluate the relevancy of a certain page which it then categorises for specific search terms so the user gets the most relevant results possible. If you have no content or your content is irrelevant or poorly structured, then it can make search engine marketing extremely difficult. We have knocked together basic guidelines for SEO friendly content:

Unique Content

“Content is King” is the phrase that was coined by the media mogul Sumner Redstone. This is true to a certain degree however we have made a slight adjustment for search engine marketing; coining the phrase “unique content is king”. It might seem like a simple short term solution to copy content from a competitor or a Wikipedia page, however Google will pick up this pretty quickly and you can get penalised or even banned from Google.

Document Structure

When putting together your document there has to be a balance of aesthetic, usability and search engine optimisation. Some webmasters go for all singing and dancing flash homepages which look great but are not designed for search engine marketing. The search engine spider needs to be directed through your webpage to the sections confirming relevancy. This is done by formatting the document structure using a series of headings which should correspond to your main keywords for that page.

Keyword Specific Content

A massive part of all search engine marketing is based on the relevancy and search volumes of keywords. After performing keyword research to find what are the most relevant and profitable keywords for your webpage, it is important to have those keywords reoccur in your document. The number of times keywords appear is called keyword density. It is essential to have an organic keyword density however pushing certain keywords too hard in any document can cause penalties within search engines.

Contextual Links

A search engine spider travels the internet using links as paths to different documents. This means that internal links are extremely useful for directing the search engine spider deeper into relevant pages of you website. This is especially true when the links are made contextually and on anchor text that is relevant to the page the link leads to.

Many webmasters shy away from content as sometimes large chunks of content can be counterproductive when you are simply trying to direct people to a product. However relevant, well structured and keyword specific content is essential for successful search engine marketing. There are methods of content presentation which can reach a good balance between aesthetic, functionality and search engine optimisation.
